Most people have a misconception about modest swimsuits i.e. they are targeted towards old and plus size swimmers. However, this could not be farther from reality. Although modest swimsuits are very popular in these two segments more and more young and fit swimmers are opting for modest swimsuits. Despite the fact that skimpy bikinis providing no or little coverage remain to be the most popular type of swimwear, there is substantial potential for modest swimsuits and not only in the old and plus size segments.
Culture also has a profound impact on the type of swimwear favored (and considered acceptable) in various parts of the world. For example, sexy (and skimpy) bikinis offering very little coverage are the most popular type of swimwear in Europe, North America and South America. However, here we should take into account the fact that such bikinis are not (readily) acceptable in all parts of the world. Not everyone is comfortable with showing so much skin. A vast majority of such women have breathed a sigh of relief at the increasing popularity of modest swimsuits. Modest swimsuits are back with the vengeance and are here to stay! Burqini (or burkini) is one of the most popular types of modest swimsuits. The burqini was designed by Lebanese Australian designer Aheda Zanetti. One of the most citied advantages of a burqini is that it provides coverage in accordance with the principles of Islam and is light enough for swimming. Thus, the primary target market of a burqini is Muslim women.
Modest Bathing Suits For People Of Various Religions
Apart from exceptions, every religion has its own standard of what will be classified as modest bathing suit.
1. Modest Swimsuit For Muslim Women – Islam has a fairly strict view about modesty in dressing. Women are expected to cover their body from head to toe. This is evident from the black robes (called burqa) worn by Muslim women all over the world. Thus, a bathing suit has to provide adequate coverage to be modest from the Islamic point of view. A modest bathing suit has to have a full length top providing coverage from neck to wrist. The bottoms of modest bathing suit will be full length pants. A modest bathing suit will include a loose fitting bathing cap. Muslim men are expected to wear garments providing coverage from chest to knees. Thus, conventional swimsuits (expect for thong swimsuits) are appropriate for Muslim men.
2. Modest Swimsuit For Jewish Women – Like all religions, Judaism has its own view of modesty. According to Orthodox Judaism, women should wear a loose fitting garment that covers their body from the collar bone to their elbows and knees. However, view on the application of this dress code varies. Religious scholars differ on the issue i.e. whether this dress code is appropriate for mix gathering or otherwise as well. Thus, modest bathing suits for Jewish women would be similar to that for Muslim and Christian women as long as essential areas of the body are covered.
3. Modest Swimsuit For Christian Women – Although different sects of the Christian community differ on what constitutes modest bathing suits for women, the general conclusion is that it should not be tempting for men. This leads to the logical conclusion that modest bathing suits should be conservative and functional rather than provocative. Skirtini and shortini are considered two types of modest bathing suits for Christian women. Although modest bathing suits Christian women are not starkly different from modest bathing suits for Muslim and Jewish women, Christians are not that strict about wearing modest bathing suits i.e. women are not condemned for wearing revealing bathing suits.
